The Difference of Single-Mode (SM) and Multi-Mode (MM) Fiber

  • The core diameter of single-mode fiber is much smaller than multimode fiber, the single-mode fiber core diameter is 9µm; the single-mode fiber wavelength is 1310 nm and 1550 nm.
  • Multimode fiber core diameter: 50µm or 62.5µm. 850nm and 1300nm wavelengths are used in multimode fiber cables.

Transmission distance is the key to choosing single-mode or multi-mode fiber, for data centers, multi-mode fiber optic cables are sufficient to meet the distance of 300 - 400 meters. In applications that require distances of up to several kilometers, single-mode fiber is the best choice.

Fiber Path Cord Polish Matters

The light loss will occur when a connector is installed, yet some will cause damage to laser light and disrupt the transmitted signal. Choosing the well polish connector will reduce the back reflections of light.

  • PC: Physical Contact polish with -35dB Return Loss measurement
  • UPC: Ultra Physical Contact polish with -55dB Return Loss measurement
  • APC: Angled Physical Contact polish (8-degree angle) with -60dB Return Loss measurement

Can I mix single-mode and multi-mode fiber?
The core sizes of multimode fiber and single-mode fiber are different, and the transmitted light mode is also different. If two optical fibers are mixed or directly connected together, a large amount of optical loss will be lost, resulting in link jitter or disconnection. Remember, never mix different types of cables randomly.
